China hopes Japan will properly handle water discharge—Spokesman

CHINA continues to call on Japan regarding the discharge of the nuclear-contaminated water from the crippled Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean.

Mao Ning, the spokeswoman of China’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said that her country hopes that Japan will adopt a responsible and constructive attitude to find an appropriate way to resolve the issues related to its discharge of the nuclear-contaminated water.

Mao made the statement at a press conference in Beijing in response to Japan’s demand for the immediate removal of the ban on imports of Japanese aquatic products.

During his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, President Xi Jinping noted that the discharge of Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water bears on the health of all humanity, the global marine environment, and the international public interest. Japan should take seriously the legitimate concerns both from home and abroad and properly handle this in a responsible and constructive manner.

To recall, Japan has kicked off the third phase of the discharge earlier November and is scheduled to continue through November 20 of this year.

The estimate of the total discharge amount is at 7,800 tons, which is nearly the same amount as that of the first and second phases, respectively.

Mao said that China hopes that the Japanese side will work with China to find an appropriate way to resolve the issue.

“I need to stress that the precautionary measures taken by China and some other countries in response to Japan’s move to protect food safety and people’s health are entirely legitimate, reasonable and necessary. We hope that the Japanese side will work with China to find an appropriate way to resolve the issue of the discharge of Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water through consultation and negotiation in a constructive manner,” according to Mao Ning, Spokeswoman of China’s Foreign Affairs Ministry.
