Congress outlines changes in MUP pension system

SPEAKER Martin Romualdez outlined the amendments to the Military and other Uniformed Personnel (MUP) Pension system.

In his speech at Camp Gregorio Lim in Cavite last Wednesday, House Speaker Martin Romualdez provided an update on the changes to the Military and Uniformed Pension (MUP).

Romualdez also shared the updates directly with the Marines.

The solutions included:

A 90% retirement package based on the base pay for all MUPs.

This is higher than the current 85% package for all AFP personnel.

Police personnel with less than 20 years of service will now be included in the pension, including a separation lump sum.

Most importantly, all MUPs will receive an annual guaranteed salary

Increase of three (3) percent.

“Our valiant Marines, I am aware of how you value your families and look forward to building a better future for spouses and children. We in Congress are aware of your challenges in making ends meet for your daily needs,” Speaker Martin Romualdez, House of Representatives said.

This includes different pension systems for uniformed and non-uniformed personnel.

Everyone actively in service will have a minimum contribution.

There will also be a special window to assist disadvantaged pensioners.

“Thanks to the House Ad Hoc Committee, all military and uniformed personnel can now rest easy, along with your families. Your pensions will surely be paid, and you will also receive an annual salary increase,” Romualdez added.

The Congress is working to address the issues faced by retirees.

They aim to do this without depleting the government’s annual budget.

A significant portion of the AFP’s annual budget allocation goes to retirees’ pensions compared to the current maintenance and operating expenditures of the institution.

If this continues, it could lead to a fiscal collapse in the country.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos himself is advocating for the prompt resolution of the pension system.
