DOE hosts Inception Meeting of ASEAN–Japan Energy Efficiency Partnership SOME-METI Work Programme 2024-2025

THE Department of Energy (DOE) hosted the ASEAN-Japan Energy Efficiency Partnership (AJEEP) Inception Meeting for the 2024-2025 Work Program.

The hybrid meeting, which was held in Makati City from 6-7 August 2024, brought together representatives from the ASEAN Center for Energy (ACE), ASEAN Member States (AMS), and Japan to discuss the key priorities and activities for the upcoming two-year period.

Participants reviewed updates to the ASEAN energy cooperation framework, discussed the direction and focus areas for AJEEP, shared country updates on energy efficiency initiatives, and finalized work plans for the partnership’s key components.

The Philippine government emphasized the critical importance of AJEEP in supporting the country’s national energy efficiency goals, as improving sustainability is a key priority for a rapidly developing economy.

“The country remains steadfast in prioritizing significant steps towards promoting energy efficiency, aligning itself with the global energy transition towards cleaner, more resilient, and sustainable energy systems,” emphasized Undersecretary Felix William B. Fuentebella during his keynote message.

He further added,“through a multifaceted approach that focuses on optimizing energy use and encouraging sustainable practices across various sectors, we aim to complement the government’s energy efficiency initiatives in promoting renewable energy adoption and enhancing overall energy sustainability.”

Through the AJEEP Scheme 2 Training of Trainers from 2016 – 2022, the Philippines produced four (4) Certified ASEAN Energy Manager Trainers, two (2) from the private sector and two (2) from the DOE. The program has demonstrably enhanced energy management system capacities and capabilities across AMS by facilitating knowledge transfer and practical training initiatives.

The meeting provided a platform for AMS to share their progress and challenges in implementing energy efficiency and conservation measures and discuss the way forward for the AJEEP work program. The discussions and outcomes of the meeting will guide the implementation of AJEEP activities in the coming fiscal year.
