Gunman surrenders after taking 17 people hostage in bus

BRAZILIAN Police arrested a gunman who captured a public bus in Novo Rio Bus Station, Rio de Janeiro.

The police and emergency vehicles arrived at the crime site for the investigation and assisting the injured.

Military police of Rio de Janeiro Spokesperson Coronel Marco Andrade confirmed that the 17 hostages were held in the bus and reported that two people were injured, ‘one with three gunshots’ and delivered to the hospital and medical center.

The suspect, who has yet to be identified, surrendered to police about after three hours of keeping hostages.

Andrade also said that as of now, the police are still investigating why the gunman hijacked the bus and took hostages.

“We don’t know at the moment what the armed person wanted,” according to Col. Marco Andrade Spokesperson, Military Police of Rio de Janeiro.

Following the gunman’s arrest, the bus station work was suspended by the police order.

One of the locals, Sarah Victoria, said that she couldn’t get into the bus station.

‘‘I’m from Minas Gerais, but I’ve lived here for 17 years, and I’m leaving precisely because of the crime in the city of Rio de Janeiro. We ended up having an anxiety attack, we were moving, and we couldn’t get into the bus station, we still don’t have any response from the bus company, about what they’re going to do, our boarding will be later, but we still don’t have more information,” Sarah Victoria, Brazilian stated.
