Iran files cases against citizens who celebrate Raisi’s death

MORE than 200 cases have been filed amid an ongoing crackdown on Iranians who rejoiced, instead of mourned, the late Iranian president’s death.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s death sparked not only official mourning but also celebrations among Iranians who opposed his rule inside and outside of the country.

Citizens expressed their joy through fireworks, memes, poetry, dancing, and even shared sweets and chocolates, among other things.

For activists, Raisi was known as the “Butcher of Iran” for his alleged involvement in the mass execution of thousands of political prisoners in 1988.

He died in a helicopter crash along with other high-ranking officials while returning from Azerbaijan on the 19th of May.

Isfahan’s Revolutionary Prosecutor cited “spreading falsehood and offensive content” and “destabilizing society’s psychological stability” as grounds for legal action.

Six candidates are competing to replace Raisi as the nationwide campaign to find his successor continues before the official elections on the 28th of June.
