Japan on high alert as unprecedented stink bugs threatens fruit crops

JAPAN is on alert for an unusual surge in stink bugs targeting fruit trees. 30 out of 47 prefectures, including Tokyo, have already issued alerts, a significant jump from previous years.

Experts attribute this spike to warmer temperatures, with some regions reporting over seven times the usual number of bugs.

Even cooler areas should remain vigilant, as past outbreaks have occurred in northeastern Japan.

Stink bugs, known for their foul-smelling secretions, pose a threat to agriculture across the country.

Chiba Prefecture, renowned for its pear production, is among the hardest hit. For the first time in a decade, they’ve issued a stink bug alert.

Surveys have revealed over seven times the usual number of bugs in the region.
