Looming famine, millions displaced as Sudan marks first year of war

CIVILIANS in Sudan suffer the consequences of war as warring factions remain locked in a deadly struggle for control in the North African nation.

Fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces erupted on April 15, 2023, with violent clashes an inescapable reality for many.

One year after the civil war started, thousands of people still fled from their homes, and millions have been displaced.

The fierce fighting caused food prices to soar by an average of more than 80% compared to pre-war levels, according to the United Nations.

Additionally, an estimated 18 million Sudanese – or around 40 percent of the national population – are facing severe levels of hunger and food insecurity.

Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the current President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan, announced that returning to the pre-war era is not an option, and has dashed any hopes of the country returning to civilian rule.
