Thailand awaits BRICS’ response after submitting a letter of intent

THAILAND showed its commitment to being part of BRICS in the soonest possible time and did not waste time taking the next step to formalize its anticipated membership.

Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sanjampongsa last week handed over to his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov an official letter of intent to become a full member of the bloc.

“I think Thailand will be able to help…that is the strong commitment of Thailand,” Maris Sanjampongsa Foreign Minister of Thailand said.

He handed the letter at the two-day meeting of Brics foreign ministers in Russia.

Thailand is poised to be the first Southeast Asian nation to join the bloc once its membership is officially approved.

The Southeast Asian nation also hopes to be invited to the upcoming BRICS summit in October.

Thailand’s effort to join BRICS has developed quickly since Thailand’s Cabinet approved a draft application in May.

BRICS was perceived as a counterbalance against western dominance and unipolar behavior by promoting multipolar world order and de-dollarization.

BRICS countries recently said it is open to welcoming more countries in the bloc as it wants emerging economies to have a larger representation worldwide.
