NAGHAHANDA na ang Department of Energy (DOE) sa pagpasok ng La Niña sa Pilipinas para tiyakin ang energy security ng bansa.
Ayon kay Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla, pinaghahandaan nila ang mga pangyayaring posibleng makaapekto sa operasyon ng mga energy facility.
“What we are preparing for is the La Niña phenomenon because the La Niña may bring rains and again we should brace ourselves for extreme events that may prejudice the operation of these plants,” saad ni Sec. Raphael Lotilla, Department of Energy.
Prayoridad ng DOE ang mga transmission line at distribution utilities na hindi maapektuhan ng mga inaasahang malalakas na pag-ulan.
“What we are really preparing would be for the securing natin ng distribution and transmission facilities kasi these are vulnerable to typhoons and other calamities including floodings,” pahayag ni Asec. Mario Masarigan, Department of Energy.
Sinabi pa ni Asec. Mario Marasigan na sa panahon ng tag-ulan mahirap ang pag-restore sa mga pumapalyang linya ng mga kuryente lalo’t delikado ang mga ito at mas prayordidad anila ang seguridad.

Bagama’t walang nakikitang problema sa suplay ng kuryente sa pagpasok ng La Niña, nanawagan pa rin ang ahensiya sa publiko ng masinop na paggamit ng kuryente.
“We still continue with the our efforts to promote energy efficiency and conservation despite the fact that there is lower demand so it becomes a habit for all of us. So that when an actual extreme event takes place, then we are in a better position to adjust to the needs of the entire economy,” dagdag ni Lotilla.
Energy forecast ng DOE sa susunod na dalawang taon, positibo
Positibo naman ang naging forecast ng DOE sa mga susunod na dalawang taon na magiging sapat ang suplay ng kuryente.
Inaasahan kasi ayon kay Marasigan ang dagdag na thermal facilities na may kapasidad na 2,000 megawatts na kinontrata ng Meralco, dagdag na coal thermal facilities sa Maribeles, at dagdag na powerplant sa Masinloc.
Mayroon din aniyang dagdag na 5,000 megawatts na renewable energy mula sa iba’t ibang teknolohiya.
“We could say that anticipating the timely testing and commissioning and coming into commercial operation of these power plants we would say that we are good not only up to 2026 but until 2028,” ani Masarigan.
