UN chief condemns airstrike that killed at least 22

OVER the weekend, an airstrike was reported on the city of Omdurman, in the District of Dar al-Salam wherein at least 22 individuals were killed and several others were injured.

Following the incident, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack and offered his condolences to the families of the victims.

Furthermore, Guterres warned that the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) could lead to a full-scale civil war and destabilize the entire region.

With this, as per deputy spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Farhan Haq, Guterres is once again calling on both sides to cease fighting.

“He (António Guterres) also urges these parties to abide by their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law to protect civilians and to enable humanitarian action,” Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, said.

Meanwhile, in a Twitter post, the RSF also condemned the attack over the weekend and blamed the SAF for allegedly orchestrating the tragic loss of the victims.

The post was also accompanied by a video wherein it showed the bodies of the victims of the airstrike.

As of the latest figures, at least 3,000 people have been killed while 6,000 others have been injured since the conflict began.
