US preparing to send troops to Djibouti Base

THE United States is getting ready to send a huge number of its troops to evacuate its embassy staff from Sudan.

The US will be sending additional troops to its military base in Djibouti, a small country located in the Horn of Africa.

Washington acquired the said base after signing a 10-year lease in 2014, and they are paying for it 63 million dollars a year.

According to White House Spokesperson John Kirby, US activities in Africa and the Middle East have grown crucially independent in Djibouti, and President Joe Biden ordered the pre-positioning of troops to be prepared.

And while the US government is preparing for the possible evacuation of its embassy staff in Sudan, US citizens in the war-torn country were earlier advised to remain indoors by the state department, and that they should not expect a US-government coordinated evacuation given the closure of Khartoum’s airport and the uncertain security situation.

American citizens were also told to make their own arrangements to stay safe.

Meanwhile, other countries are preparing contingency plans to evacuate their citizens.

Reports citing the United Kingdom said British troops are on standby to evacuate embassy staff and UK citizens in Sudan, and although no rescue mission has been requested from the foreign office, there are plans still in place for the eventuality.

Indian Prime Minister Modi told his officials to prepare evacuation plans for stranded Indians in Sudan.

Japan’s self-defense forces plane on Friday left the country for Djibouti to bring back home Japanese citizens; Japanese officials say there are 63 Japanese nationals in Sudan, most of whom are in Khartoum.

South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol also ordered his troops to send military aircraft for the evacuation of South Koreans.

Meanwhile, the Philippines hopes to start the repatriation of Filipinos; the Department of Foreign Affairs said 86 Filipinos have already requested the Philippine Embassy in Egpyt to arrange their evacuation and repatriation.
