Western leaders call for restraint amid fears of Iran’s retaliation; U.S. to continue shipping weapons to Israel

AS tensions in the Middle East are reaching a critical point, the United States and its allies brace for a possible Iranian attack on Israel. Diplomatic efforts are intensifying, but the threat of regional conflict looms large.

Amid these rising tensions, leaders from five Western nations—the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy—have issued a joint statement urging restraint. The leaders warned Iran and its allies against launching anticipated retaliatory attacks on Israel, following the recent assassinations of senior Hamas and Hezbollah figures, which have been attributed to Israel.

In their statement, the Western powers expressed strong support for ongoing efforts to de-escalate the conflict and secure a ceasefire in Gaza. “We called on Iran to stand down its ongoing threats of a military attack against Israel and discussed the serious consequences for regional security should such an attack take place,” the statement read.

The international community is closely watching developments, particularly following the assassination of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut last month. These incidents have fueled fears of a broader regional conflict, though Iran and Hezbollah have maintained they are not seeking an all-out war but remain ready should it occur.

Meanwhile, Western nations are supporting renewed efforts led by the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt to secure a truce in Gaza and bring an end to the 10-month-long war. At the same time, the US, France, Germany, and Italy are still supplying weapons to Israel.

On Sunday, the US deployed a guided missile submarine and expedited the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East.
