AN official commission in Ottawa is set to investigate allegations of election interference by China, Russia, and India in Canada’s last two federal elections.
Chaired by Justice Marie-Josee Hogue, the inquiry follows concerns raised by politicians, including former Conservative MP Kenny Chiu, who revealed being informed by Canada’s spy agency about misinformation campaigns.
The commission aims to address worries about unintended foreign support for politicians and the potential racial stigma associated with charges of interference.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau initiated the inquiry last year, and the commission is tasked with producing an interim report by May 3 and a final report by the end of 2024.
China, Russia, and India—have denied the allegations.
The investigation comes ahead of Canada’s next federal election, scheduled for no later than October 20, 2025.
