HEAVY rains that poured in several provinces of Ecuador triggered a landslide this past weekend.
A hill that partially collapsed on Sunday swept over some houses and vehicles, killing eight and injuring 22 others.
11 people were declared missing.
Residents in the city of Baños, known among tourists as a jumping-off point for adventures in the Amazon jungle, were affected the most.
The heavy rains resulted in landslides and flooding that affected at least 13 provinces, destroying some bridges and highways, and blocking the main road connecting Ecuador’s highlands to its Amazonian provinces.
The tragedy took place as memories of the previous landslide that buried families in Ecuador’s Chimborazo region in March of last year remain fresh in memory. The tragic incident killed 11 people and more than 60 people were declared missing.
Apart from the South American nation, severe weather blamed on climate change has drenched parts of Central America, with 13 people dead after flooding and landslides in El Salvador and Guatemala.
