Gas explosion fire in Kenya leaves at least 3 dead, nearly 300 injured

A night gas plant explosion has left at least three people killed and dozens injured in Nairobi, Kenya.

People fled the scene, and rescuers were seen extinguishing a fire that broke out inside the building.

An injured person can also be seen receiving first aid inside an ambulance.

The fire just before midnight at a gas refilling company. The building is badly damaged.

The explosion followed by the blaze reportedly started in Nairobi’s Embakasi neighborhood at a lorry carrying gas. Hundreds of people were injured as the fire erupted and many were at home.

‘’On stepping out, I heard a loud explosion, so huge. I have never seen such a thing in my life. The fire was over us, so we started running and I fell on a rock,’’ Julia Waithera said.

‘’I came when there was a lot of fire and then I heard a loud bang,’’ Sarah said.

According to Kenya red cross, 271 people have been evacuated to various health facilities in Nairobi, and 27 people more were treated on site.

100 households have also been evicted.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire that spread within the area damaging several neighboring buildings.
