PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. recognized Filipinos who are working abroad in commemoration of Migrant Workers Day.
In his recorded video message, President Marcos highlighted the profound impact Filipinos have made globally, emphasizing their unparalleled contributions to both their host countries and the Philippines.
“Your contributions have enriched the lives of countless individuals and societies to your different professions and capacities. Despite the miles that separate us, your heart and soul remained firmly rooted in our homeland and your unwavering love for our nation shines bright,” said President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.
The president added that the government understands the struggles they have been through to achieve their goal of improving their living as well as their loved ones.
President Marcos has also assured that he will continue to promote a government whose presence Filipinos will feel anywhere in the world.
“That’s why this administration will continue to foster stronger ties with countries that host our migrant workers, ensuring safety, welfare and wellbeing. As you build your dreams in far-off lands and seas, do know that you are not alone,” added President Marcos.
OFWs considered the driving force behind the country’s economic rise—OFW Party-list
Meanwhile, OFW Party-list Representative Marissa ‘Del Mar’ Magsino acknowledged the significant contribution of Filipino migrants, which she identified as a pivotal force driving the development of the country’s economy. Magsino specifically highlighted the crucial role played by their remittances sent back to the Philippines.
In fact, it is estimated that the personal remittances of OFWs in the Philippines exceeded 36 billion dollars in 2022, contributing 8.9% to the gross domestic product and 8.4% to the gross national income.
According to Magsino, based on the briefing held in the chamber in February by the Development Budget Coordinating Council, the economic managers concurred with her on the significant assistance provided by OFWs’ remittances to the country’s economy during the height of the pandemic.
“Because of the remittances that our OFWs send to their families, not only do the lives of their families in the Philippines become easier and better, but it also drives the economic growth of our country,” said Cong. Marissa ‘Del Mar’ Magsino, OFW Party-list.
However, Magsino pointed out that Filipinos going abroad should base their decision on their desire to work there, rather than the lack of opportunities in the Philippines.
This is why the government should prioritize this matter and ensure the implementation of effective policies that will help generate sufficient job opportunities for Filipinos.
“Working abroad must be anchored in an open willingness to work; not because they are forced to gamble due to the lack of opportunities in their country. So we also need to focus on policies that will provide full employment here in the Philippines,” Magsino added.
