Sen. Angara open to be the next DepEd secretary

Sen. Angara open to be the next DepEd secretary

ALTHOUGH there has been no formal offer from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Senator Sonny Angara has expressed his openness to become the next Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd).

In an ambush interview in Baler, Aurora, Angara said he is open to the position if the president entrusts it to him.

To recall Vice President Sara Duterte recently resigned as the head of the said department.

Senators have been pushing for Angara to fill the vacant position due to his extensive background in the education sector.

“We are deeply grateful to our colleagues, Senate President Escudero, former Senate President Zubiri, Sen Win Gatchalian, JV Ejercito, Joel Villanueva. We are thankful for their vote of confidence. They know that when it comes to work, I am serious,” Sen. Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara said.

In relation to this, Senate President Francis Chiz Escudero said that there is no need for a special election to fill Angara’s possible vacant seat in the Senate.

Escudero pointed out that Angara’s term will also end in 2025.

“The term of Senator Angara will be expiring in June 2025 anyway. I think there’s no need to fill it with a special election that would only incur costs. So I think we should just wait for it to expire. So if the senator accepts if he is appointed, there will only be 23 senators,” Sen. Francis Chiz Escudero Senate President.

Vice President Sara submitted her resignation letter to the president on June 19.

Although she did not state the reason for her resignation, she said it was not a sign of weakness but rather out of her love for teachers and students.

Ten days later, President Marcos said he was having difficulty finding a replacement for the position left by VP Inday Sara and that he wanted to give himself more time to choose who he would appoint to the said post.
