Shanghai endures its hottest day in 2024

THE bustling city of Shanghai, China, experienced its hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures sweltering past forty degrees Celsius.

China’s Shanghai issues its highest heatwave alert for the second time this week.

The bustling metropolis, home to 24 million people, experienced 40.4 (forty point four) degrees Celsius on Monday, marking this the hottest day of the year in the country so far.

This sweltering day was the third instance this summer where temperatures soared past 40 degrees Celsius.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau forecasted that the heatwave will last for a few days with highs of 39 degrees Celsius and that the city will remain under the grip of a subtropical high-pressure system for the coming week.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 35 to 37 degrees by the middle of the week.

The heat is expected to ease around August 12 when the high will drop to 33 degrees Celsius.

Shanghai’s highest-ever temperature was 40.9 degrees Celsius, recorded since China began its meteorological observations in 1873.

Historically, it is the 24th time that this kind of extreme heat has been recorded since 1873.
