THAKSIN Shinawatra, a controversial political figure in Thailand, received a warm welcome during his visit to the headquarters of the Pheu Thai party on Tuesday afternoon.
This is the first time he stepped within the halls of the headquarters after nearly 17 years of self-imposed exile.
Thaksin founded the Pheu Thai party on September 20, 2007. He founded the political party a year after he was overthrown from power in a military coup in September 2006.
The 74-year-old billionaire went into self-imposed exile after his political career ended.
The business tycoon was arrested on charges related to corruption and abuse of power after he returned to the country in August 2023.
He only served six months out of his reduced eight-year sentence.
His daughter Pawtongtarn Shinawatra is the current leader of Pheu Thai.
