EU commissioner eyes restrictions on exports from Ukraine

EU Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski warned that the bloc’s agriculture sector is at risk of another oversupply crisis this year if restrictions are not placed over exports from Ukraine.

Early on when the Russia-Ukraine conflict started, the bloc suspended tariffs on Ukrainian exports, but such a decision meant that neighboring countries were unable to compete with imported goods such as cheap grain.

In response, member-states began imposing restrictions, with Belgium banning Ukrainian grain exports, and Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania reinstating restrictions at a national level.

Currently, the bloc is now discussing whether free trade for Ukraine should remain until 2025.

According to Wojciechowski, his agenda is to include some restrictions on certain goods to ensure that no oversupply crisis will happen again.

Meanwhile, the official is also pushing for the bloc to support Kyiv in its exports to third countries.
