THE number of people killed by heavy floods in Thailand has risen to 23 since September after five more people died earlier this week.
Authorities issued flood warnings in 32 provinces. At least Thai citizens have died in floods and 33 have been injured since the beginning of the monsoon season in September.
In Ayutthaya province, nearly 12,000 households were submerged by the floods after irrigation officials released a surge of water through the Chao Phraya dam for three consecutive days.
The rising level of water also submerged farmland in five sub-districts and 13 villages which covered an area of about 8,480 hectares.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin visited affected areas as local authorities handed out survival kits to evacuees.
The wet season, which normally takes place from May to October, has affected more than 62,000 households in Thailand, according to the Ministry of Interior.
Thailand is not a stranger to natural disasters. In 2011, the country was hit with widespread flooding that damaged millions of homes and killed more than 50 people.
