Turkiye, Greece mend ties after years of friction

TURKISH President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan traveled to the Greek Capital of Athens this week for the fifth meeting of the Turkey-Greece high-level cooperation council.

Erdoğan held talks with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis as well as the country’s first female President Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

Both sides have signed 15 accords, among them was a 12-month visa program that would allow Turkish tourists to visit nearby Greek Islands all year round without the need to apply for permits.

For decades, Greece and Turkey have been at odds on several regional issues such as where to start and end their continental shelves as well as energy resources, among others.

Erdoğan seeks a new chapter in relations with Greece on the basis of “win-win” principles and to double their bilateral trade volume to $10-B.

The 15 cooperation documents signed by both countries cover other areas such as tourism, energy, and trade.
