W.H.O. confirms first human death in H3N8 bird flu

THE World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that a woman from Guangdong province in Southeast China died from H3N8 bird flu which is the first case of human death from the avian influenza strain.

According to the Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention (GPCDCP), the woman was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and other basic medical histories.

The deceased also had a history of exposure to live poultry before getting the avian influenza strain and a history of wild bird activities around her home.

The World Health Body assured that the risk of the virus spreading at a national or international level was “low.”

Local Health Authorities in Zhongshan City, home to around 4.4-M people reported the case on March 26.

Meanwhile, the first two non-fatal cases of human infection caused by H3N8 bird flu were also detected in China in April and May 2022.

However, this is the first known human death from the avian influenza strain which is also known to infect horses, dogs, and seals.
