Germany accuses Russia of cyber attacks, warns Moscow of consequences

GERMAN Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock claimed that Russian cyber espionage group APT28, was the mastermind behind the wave of cyber attacks against government officials and military databases last year.

The said group also known as Fancy Bear is controlled by the Russian military intelligence service GRU. According to Baerbock, the group linked to numerous cyberattacks worldwide compromised email accounts belonging to executives of Germany’s Social Democratic Party.

Baerbock also warned China last year that Germany is “very serious” about reducing the European country’s economic dependency on China, a close ally of Russia.

The German foreign minister unveiled the accusations during his visit to Australia and warned Moscow of consequences.

Baerbock’s visit to Australia made him the first German foreign minister to visit the country in 13 years where she met her Australian counterpart Penny Wong.
