Hundreds evacuate as Indonesia’s Mt. Ibu erupts

AN erupting Mount Ibu volcano in Western Indonesia forced residents to flee their homes after a series of eruptions since last week.

Located on remote Halmahera island, Mount Ibu alerted authorities and residents due to its consistent volcanic activities.

The 4,347-foot volcano has been spewing thick grey ash and dark clouds up to 16,400 feet into the air every day since last Friday, urging authorities to raise the alert level from 4 to 5.

Mount Ibu has spewed ash and smoke 5,000m into the sky and erupted two days in a row earlier this week.

Authorities said the evacuation was a “preventive” measure since the residents evacuated from the area were living around 7-kilometer from the volcano or within the exclusion zone set by officials.

Another volcanic eruption rocked Indonesia’s North Sulawesi province last month while residents in Sumatra are still recovering from deadly flash floods that killed more than 60 people last week.
