Oil spill sparks state of emergency in Kuwait

KUWAIT oil company, one of the largest producers in the region, declared a state of emergency following an oil spill on land.

The oil spill happened on land, but not in a residential area, and no toxic fumes have been reported.

Emergency response teams were immediately sent to determine the source of the leak and contain the oil spill.

Kuwait oil company has reported oil spills from the field it operates in 2016 and 2020.

In August 2017, Kuwait reported two oil slicks off its shores which experts believed have released up to 35,000 barrels of crude oil in a span of a few days.

Kuwait is a key member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) – an organization of oil-producing countries that collectively influence the global market and maximize profit.

More than 90% of Kuwait’s income comes from oil revenues and pumps around 2.7 million barrels of crude oil per day.

No people have been injured and oil production has not been disrupted after the incident.
