Presidential candidate in Taiwan seeks to establish deeper cooperation with Japan

FORMER Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je, a leading candidate in Taiwan’s presidential election next January, has called for deeper cooperation with Japan in hopes of maintaining peace in the region and contributing to global technological and economic development.

In a speech given by Ko at the Foreign Correspondent’s Club during his trip to Japan, he highlighted how strong relations between Taiwan and Japan had developed due to significant engagements over a hundred years.

As per Ko’s statement, Japan holds the position of being Taiwan’s third largest trading partner, with the two closely cooperating in the semiconductor industry.

Ko who set up the TPP in 2019 as a “third force” has emerged as one of the top three contenders for president along with current Vice President Lai Ching-te and Opposition party leader Mayor Hou Yu-Ih.

According to Ko, when he founded the party, Taiwanese people were fed up with the power struggles between the two major parties.

When founding his party, Ko noted a general dissatisfaction among Taiwanese people with politics due to repeated power struggles between major parties.

Meanwhile, concerning defense between China and Taiwan, Ko emphasized that maintaining a good level of defensive capabilities is essential while keeping dialogues ongoing for the purpose of deterrence.
