PRIME Minister of the Solomon Islands Manasseh Sogavare slammed the Japanese government for discharging the nuclear-contaminated wastewater from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean.
Sogavare made the remarks in the presence of other Pacific leaders while attending the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) leaders’ summit in Vanuatu’s capital city of Port Vila stating that such move has an impact on its people, ocean, economy and livelihood.
Leaders from the Melanesian spearhead group plans to denounce Japan putting anything into the Pacific Ocean until they are absolutely clear that there’s no danger.
Meanwhile, China has banned all seafood from Japan in response to Tokyo’s decision while the Chinese Embassy in Fiji has strongly criticized the Japanese government over the matter.
Moreover, locals in Tokyo have protested against the government’s plan one day before the nuclear-contaminated water was released in the Pacific Ocean.
Countries in the Pacific remain divided over Japan’s decision to pump treated water from the Fukushima Nuclear Plant into the sea despite science supporting the controversial initiative.
