Woman loses leg in Bangkok airport’s escalator accident

A 57-year-old Thai passenger had no choice but to have her leg amputated after it got trapped inside a travelator while trying to board a morning flight from Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport this week.

The woman was supposed to travel from Bangkok to the Southern Nakhon Si Thammarat province when she got caught by the moving walkway in the airport’s Terminal 2.

Airport officials sent a medical team who eventually had to cut her left leg off from above the knee to release her beneath the belt.

Images of the woman’s leg getting trapped beneath the belt have surfaced online.

The escalator in question was manufactured by Hitachi and has been in operation since 1996 while the investigation surrounding the tragic accident continues.

The airport said it has no intention of using the old escalator any longer and assured such an accident will not happen again in the future.

The woman has been transferred to Bumrungrad International Hospital where the facility announced the good news that her severed leg can be reattached.

The airport agreed to shoulder the woman’s medical expenses as well as grant additional compensation.
