THE African delegation is currently in Ukraine for their peace mission for Kyiv and Moscow.
Before traveling to Kyiv, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa first arrived in Poland and visited the capital of Warsaw to pay a courtesy call on President Andrzej Duda at the Polish Presidential Palace.
After arriving in Poland, Ramaphosa and the African delegation traveled to Ukraine for the much-awaited peace talks with Zelenskyy and other Ukrainian officials.
Ramaphosa was received by Ukrainian top envoys after he arrived at the Nemishaeve Railway Station in Ukraine and visited several sites together with top African leaders and representatives.
The African Peace Mission comprises of seven heads of state seeking peace between Russia and Ukraine, they agreed to meet with Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin this weekend.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, one of the seven African heads of state that will lead the peace mission, was unable to attend after testing positive for COVID-19 on June 7. Museveni is still in self-isolation as he has yet to recover.
With the Ugandan president absent, the African delegation consisted of leaders from Egypt, Comoros, Congo, South Africa, Senegal, and Zambia, while a deputy will represent Uganda.
The African peace initiative, also called as ‘The Road to Peace’ was announced by Ramaphosa in May, and both Putin and Zelenskyy agreed to host and listen to the delegation.
Ramaphosa has insisted that South Africa will not be drawn into a global power struggle and that it has adopted neutrality in line with its independent foreign policy.
Ramaphosa is set to return to South Africa on June 18th.
