Thailand self-exiled former PM faces arrest as he returns to country

FORMER Prime Minister of Thailand and billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra will serve 8 years in prison for three outstanding charges.

Thailand’s supreme court handed the 8 year sentence on Tuesday.

The business tycoon-turned-politician  arrived in Thailand on Tuesday morning at Bangkok Don Mueang Airport after boarding a private jet from Singapore.

Shinawatra would be arrested and taken directly to the Supreme Court for a hearing, before being transferred to a prison.

He was overthrown as prime minister in 2006 and lived in self-imposed exile since 2008.

Shinawatra was arrested hours before Pheu Thai Party‘s candidate Srettha Thavisin was voted the next Thai PM.

The Shinawatra Family founded Pheu Thai in 2007.
