PM rejects Vietnam’s bid to operate electric vehicles in Cambodia

A spokesman for the Royal Government confirmed on Thursday that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet rejected plans by a Vietnamese company to operate electric taxis in Cambodia.

The government made the announcements a day after some media outlets reported that Vietnam’s Vingroup was planning to launch 2,500 electric taxi companies in several Cambodian cities including Phnom Penh in 2024.

The meeting between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and the President of Vingroup on December 12, 2023, in Hanoi caused media confusion, as clarified by the Royal Government.

Cambodia registered more than 700 electric vehicles in 2022 and pledged to continue promoting its use as a means of reducing environmental pollution.

The Southeast Asian country is in the early stages of adopting the electric vehicle infrastructure.

It aims for 40% of all cars and urban buses and 70% of motorbikes nationwide to be electric by 2050.
